By the end of this class you will be able to:
• Explain the overall purpose of a well kill.

• List the essential elements to successfully kill a well.

• Explain when the Driller’s Method or Wait & Weight method can be applied.

• Pressure losses during drilling operations
– Explain why the pump pressure is the sum of all pressure losses.
– Explain how bottom hole pressure is affected by the annular pressure loss.
– Explain how pump pressure changes when the fluid density changes.

• Describe and apply the U-tube model to drilling and well control situations.

• Gas laws and influx migration and expansion
– Apply the basic gas law and predict how the pressure and volume of a gas influx change as it moves up the wellbore.
– Understand the difference between gas migration effects in an open well and a shut-in well.

• Interpret the build up of surface pressure after well shut-in and select the stabilised pressures SIDPP and SICP.

• Explain the flow path during well control operations using a surface BOP stack.

• Slow circulation rate (SCR)
– Explain why slow circulation rate pressures are recorded during drilling operations.
– Explain how the slow circulation rate affects wellbore pressure losses in a well control situation.
– Explain how pressure losses affect the drill pipe pressure and casing pressure during well kill operations.

• Well control principles
– Calculate the kill fluid density using the stabilised shut-in pressures.
– Explain how bottom hole pressure can be kept constant using the U-tube model.
– Explain the correct procedure for starting and stopping a well kill.

• Wait & Weight Method
– Describe the four phases of the W&W method.
– Describe the principles of the W&W method using the U-tube model.
– Explain how and why drill pipe pressure and casing pressure change during the W&W method.
– Construct and explain the kill graph for the W&W method.

• Driller’s Method
– Describe the two circulations of the Driller’s method.
– Describe the principles of the Driller’s method using the U-tube model.
– Explain how and why drill pipe pressure and casing pressure change during the Driller’s method.
– Construct and explain the kill graph for the Driller’s method.

Certification

On completing this course, participants will receive a certificate from Well Academy. Please make sure you sign up with the names that you would like to appear on your certificate.
